About Will
Hi! My name is Will, and I’m the guy behind FastGAMSAT.com. I passed the GAMSAT on my first go, with just 59 days of study; and went on to attend andĀ graduate with an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) from the University of Queensland.
I’m really just a guy who once had the goal to pass the post-graduate medical entrance exam (the GAMSAT exam). When I first went to uni, like a lot of young people out there, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life: I studied Psychology because I enjoyed pop psychology, never really wanting to work in the field. But I still had to look for work when I graduated – and let me tell you, it sucks trying to look for work when you (a) don’t want to work in your field of study, and (b) don’t know where you want to be in life.
After graduating from psychology in December 2008, was 2 months of not pretending to job-seek, with results to suggest I was pretending. All the while, I didnāt think I had enough time to take the GAMSAT, nor did I have any motivation to pursue that career.
On the fateful nightĀ of January 20, 2009, I got talking to a medical graduate by chance.
It would be one of the eventsĀ that changed my life.
What did Will learn that fateful night?
The med gradĀ taught me that:
- Medicine is incredibly flexible: You can seek the work-life balance, working 2-3 days/week as a GP, or overdose on workaholicism fixing one patient after the other.
- You can profoundly impact people: A palliative pathway can give terminal patients the comfort of saying goodbye to loved ones, whereas an organ transplant can tack on decades to someoneās life.
- You can impact metric tons of people – to give just 2 examples:
- Dr Ian Frazer (Australian, Nobel Prize winner) helped develop Gardasil, the vaccine that helps prevent cervical cancer (by preventing HPV infection).
- Dr Barry Marshall (Nobel Prize winner, also Australian) showed that the bacteria H. pylori directly causes stomach ulcers (by drinking the bacteria himself), revolutionising the diseaseās treatment (offering an actual definitive treatment in relevant cases).
This blew me away: Medicine was not just the pretentious-sounding generic title parents wish upon their kids upon a star, but a noble pursuit and open-ended career that I could see myself taking on.
It was then that I developed a burning desire to become a doctor – and now thereās the first obstacle: The GAMSAT.
Now I had my goal.
What were the odds?
I must say, not a lot of people believed I could do it.
I had no science background,
I had no A-grades and GPA-7s,
And I had 59 days till GAMSAT day.
No way, they said!
Whey, I said.
So, I did it. I passed on my first time sitting the GAMSAT, with 2 months of prep. And I started med school the following year, without incident.
It almost sounds expected.
Why FastGAMSAT?
But it wasnāt expected. It was highly unlikely. It was quite an achievement.
When thereās as much as a once-a-year, $400+ exam (not counting spending on other resources, which can be thousands of dollars) riding on the line, the pressure is enormous.
(Like, freakinā big.)
And the pressure to freak out, cop out, and make out (this last one is optional – though not if I have it my way) is human instinct.
I know: Iāve been there, looking over the edge — multiple times.
But as you probably know: You lose when you give in. Because the GAMSAT demands your very best, thereās no room for a hand-waving āwhateverā performance.
Thatās why I started FastGAMSAT: To help light the way.
The Three Pillars: Faster, Smarter, and Snarkier
GAMSAT prep is a massive undertaking – especially under a time limit. And should you choose to accept your mission, you will feel no shortage of fear and doubt.
Faster:
My goal is to tell you my story, and show you that it is possible to pass the GAMSAT fast, so no matter how littleĀ time you have to prepare, that you believe a bit more in yourself.
Smarter:
Of course, I canāt just show you that itās possible – but also how itās possible: Youāll learn the tips and strategies of properly preparing for and sitting the GAMSAT.
Snarkier:
Most of the GAMSAT resources out there involve lecturers and tutors being all professional and shit, and talking with stuffy terms and monotones and Krispy Kreme glazed-over eyes.
Thatās not my gig: I prefer to chat to you as if you were a good friend (disclaimer: even though you’re probably not – don’t take it personally though) – who can take a joke without taking offence and/or sobbing uncontrollably (I said don’t take it personally!), and as a human being – who learns just as well (and actually better) when enjoying yourself.
Thus, throughout my blog posts, pages, ebook, and other stuff (coming soon!), I let rip with sarcasm and pop culture references whenever inspiration catches me unawares.
Even though learning material isnāt written to entertain, I aim to misbehave: If you can get through the ebook without so much as a smile, I will refund you your money (but not before crying for hours though).
If you walk away from your FastGAMSAT experience having been a little less bored and a little less stressed, I wouldāve done my job properly.
Final Words
I dedicate this website to my parents, who have been putting up with me and my strange ways since time immemorial – I wouldnāt be where I am today without them.
